Staying Sane by Eben and Rob

I recently had a thoughtful and fun conversation with poet and climate justice champion Eben E. B. Bein on the topic of staying sane without giving up the fight. Here’s a video of Eben reading their poem This Body It is For, and highlights from the interview are below.

Eben and I have worked together on all kinds of interesting climate-related advocacy. We also share a lot of interests which show up in what we write. I was happy to see they were doing a poetry reading nearby and I went down to check it out.

The Susan Bird

I see says the sparrow
Chirp cheep churrah
I am glad for this warm spot by the rain barrel
I see I see I see again
I hop I peck I look around

I am glad for my time in the grass
In the air
For the mate who replied to my song
Who with we made life
Who with we ate worms
Not troubled the worms lived no more

When my mate died,
I sat wings folded
In the gold green shade of a susan flower
Less thanks
Less song

I am a bird
A sparrow three inches tall
My eyes turn to Robbie
And he says thank you
